ADVANCED
8th GRADE WELCOME TO SCIENCE! The next 36 weeks will be exciting! You will be learning about Chemistry, Physics, Earth & Space Science, Sex Education and will participate in the Greater San Diego Science Fair. Plus we will spend some time on science fiction of yesterday (which in some cases is now science-fact!) and the science fiction of tomorrow! We will be
working with chemicals, building roller coasters, burning things, building
things... why we may even blow up a few things just for some Physics
fun!! We will be busy, but I think you'll have fun and will enjoy learning! You
will be working with a NEW science book, plus Holt Physical Science,
and 2 Science Interactions books . I send weekly e-mails on Friday night/Saturday morning. Please be sure to check your e-mail DAILY to see if I have sent additional information. All e-mails will be sent prior to 8pm. If you aren’t receiving my e-mails something is wrong! Be sure to e-mail me and find out why you aren’t getting them: MrsG9064@aol.com For class you will need approx. 5: 70 page spiral notebooks. Buy them NOW (they’re only 25cents most places!) DO NOT PURCHASE LARGER THAN 70 PAGES!!!!! PLEASE! We will start using the first one THIS WEEK! In addition, you will need a special Science Fair Notebook. This needs to be a separate 1/2 -1 inch, 3 ring notebook. I will announce the days you’ll need to bring this to class. For our regular, non-science fair time, we will be using the spiral notebooks as “Interactive notebooks”. Failure to bring yours to class will result in a loss of 25 points. BRING IT EVERY DAY! It will hold your syllabus, class notes, labs & video notes. It needs to be kept neat, and in order. This is what you will turn in to be graded. I will collect ALL your work for each unit at one time. These dates are noted on your syllabus by "Notebook turn in dates". Please assemble your work to turn in, in the order of the cover sheet. Notebooks that have work out of order lose 50 points. I do not want to have to search for your completed assignments. You will receive a 3-4 week syllabus that states on a daily basis, class work, labs, videos, homework, review and tests dates. LATE WORK IS UNACCEPTABLE!! This is an advanced class and as such, late work will receive maximum penalties. Please plan ahead and complete all work ON TIME!!! Work/assignments/tests will not be a surprise for you... please don't ask for extensions! I know you are juggling your life and your school work. Stay on top of your syllabus so you don’t become overwhelmed! All reading assignments are to be outlined!! (This means you take some notes on what you're reading!) Typically this is 10 bullet points per section. You will be graded on reading notes. DO NOT COPY from the book, but put "in your own words" what the book is telling you. If you need help in outlining, PLEASE see me!! Questions at the end of the section are usually offered for extra credit. The chapter review is assigned. A successful scientist is extremely well organized! I believe this will
be a wonderful start for your success in science! Good luck and welcome!! |
